Our story began around the first decade of 2000. We saw our fathers retire and observed the subsequent changes that came with it. While our mothers continued to be homemakers, our fathers found themselves experiencing freedom and relief but also boredom. We noticed a decline in our parents’ well- being due to the lack of productive engagement. We returned empty-handed when we went out looking for opportunities for them and that is when the idea of Silver Talkies came to us. Our journey began in 2014 and we still consider ourselves as a start-up, as we are constantly evolving based on our deepened and continued understanding of needs and desires of older adults. We are an all-women team working to add that extra bit of sunshine to those seemingly grey skies. We have managed a few rainbows too!
To make loneliness, social isolation and lack of engagement opportunities a non- issue and make active ageing a desirable and viable goal for older adults.
It is our endeavour to present you with a diverse range of opportunities and avenues to choose from, based on your past, present and future interest areas.
Growing old in age is inevitable but growing old in mind, body and spirit can be prolonged with the right mindset and lifestyle. Research, experts and real-life stories suggest that the way to healthy ageing is to live active and ensure holistic well-being, beyond just physical health. Emotional and social well-being are intrinsic pillars of healthy ageing. A 2017 survey by Agewell Foundation revealed that every second elderly feels lonely. Second to physical health - loneliness, social isolation and lack of social engagement opportunities are the key concerns facing an older adult. We firmly believe that active ageing is the most promising and economical form of preventive healthcare and this belief forms the core of our work.
Many older adults are no stranger to loneliness and social isolation for reasons like shrinking families, disruption of social relationships because of age, loss of spouse, friends and ill-health. Our community bridges that gap by bringing them together.
