Smart Kitchen Hacks To Help You Store Veggies, Groceries & Fruits For Longer During The Lockdown
These smart kitchen hacks will enable you to store veggies and groceries for long and make your lives easier during the lockdown.
Difficult times call for innovative measures. As the lockdown goes on and everyone is advised to stay indoors, it is prudent to avoid going out and shopping as much as possible and make the most of what we have. Given the times, it’s essential for us to know the different hacks of storing kitchen ingredients, be it veggies or groceries or fruits and milk. Here are some smart kitchen hacks to make life easier during the lockdown from members of Silver Talkies.
Storing hacks for vegetables and groceries
. You can roll up vegetables in brown paper and further roll up the brown paper veggie roll in a big and thick plastic cover (like that of the wheat flour (atta) cover we get from the market) and store them in the refrigerator. No other plastic covers can keep the veggies fresh for long. Also, remember to keep only one veggie in a cover. In case such covers are not available, you can use zip lock bags to store vegetables in the refrigerator.
. You can use paper napkins as well instead of brown paper, although the brown cover is the best.
. Remove stems of green chillies before storing them.
. The current sanitising advisory tells us to wash everything thoroughly before storing. If you are washing vegetables, make sure to dry them well before you store them in the refrigerator.
. Tomatoes stay fresh outside for a long time, so no need to store it in the refrigerator immediately once you get it.
. As organic groceries cannot be stored for a long time, open it when required. If there is a large amount, store it in the fridge.
. You can store rasam powder, sambar powder, and other dry powders in the freezer.
Dry curry leaves in the sun (follow the same for mint leaves and coriander leaves; once dry grind to a powder and store in mason jars.
. You can store nuts in the refrigerator.
. Store the potatoes on the floor. Use a large stone thali or an open container.
. You can wash ginger thoroughly, pat them on a dry cloth, put them in a container and then freeze it. Whenever you need to use it, do not thaw, just rinse once with tap water and start grating it. The peel will come off easily and it will grate nicely as it is firm. Grate as much as you want and then put it back in the refrigerator.
Storing hacks for fruits and milk
. You can use cling film to wrap the stems of the bananas to keep them fresh for long, be it individual bananas or bunches. Also, you can peel bananas and freeze them to add to smoothies and recipes later.
. Peel your apples before freezing them as apple skins may have small bruises and marks that can lead to spoilage. Also, you can peel and cut the apples into bite-sized chunks and freeze in packs.
. Remove softened grapes from the entire bunch, wash them and dry thoroughly before freezing. They can last long for six to eight months.
. You can freeze milk into ice cube trays. This way, you will never run out of milk for your tea and coffee.
Hope these simple ways help you in convenient storage of kitchen supplies and make your life hassle-free during the lockdown.

Very useful tips. I store channa dal in packets in the fridge as it gets pests far sooner than other dals. I also store stems of cilantro (hara dhania) in a plastic cover in the fridge. It can be used in making rasam as the stems and roots are more fragrant than the leaves.
