The 6 Best Places To Retire In India

What are the best Indian cities to retire in? We put together a mini-list

Choosing the right place to live out your retirement is a critical decision many face. Although it's a deeply personal choice that's often influenced by proximity to family and friends, a few factors are commonly considered when making this decision. These include access to good healthcare facilities, cultural diversity, and a peaceful environment. Here are six destinations that are always popular for retirement in India.

Goa - Beyond Beaches

Who doesn't want to retire in Goa? It continues to rule as a top retirement spot, and recent research supports that. According to the National Sample Survey (NSS) 2023, Goa boasts a lower crime rate, making it a safe place for older adults. The state's healthcare facilities are good. What adds to Goa's charm is the diversity and creativity floating in Goa.

The state has a rich cultural heritage and a vibrant arts scene, with many creative people making Goa their home. A thriving expatriate community means you can meet and make friends with people worldwide. The NSS 2023 data also highlights the reasonable cost of living, allowing retirees to stretch their pension while enjoying Goa's laid-back lifestyle and pleasant climate. Goa offers a perfect blend of relaxation and cultural exploration for retirees, whether it's the serene beaches or the historic forts.

Coimbatore - Wellness First

Coimbatore is a well-known retirement destination, primarily due to its emphasis on healthcare and proximity to spiritual places. Mercer's Quality of Living Survey underlines Coimbatore's excellent, affordable healthcare services. This Tamil Nadu destination sits cosy, close to the Nilgiri Hills. Coimbatore's Cost of Living Index (COLI) for 2022-2023 indicates that living here is relatively less costly than in major metropolitan areas.

According to the Annual Survey of India's City-Systems (ASICS) 2022-2023, Pune stands out as a popular retirement destination due to its mix of every metro city convenience and laid-back, unhurried appeal. Despite the challenges posed by increasing construction and traffic, the city has all modern conveniences, from the best of healthcare to entertainment. Pune's moderate climate, diverse cultural activities (this is a city for regional theatre and music aficionados), proximity to Mumbai and various holiday destinations in the Western Ghats make it a lively and engaging retirement option. Don't like travelling out of the city? Its many small hills and lush green parks with walk and mini-trek options are also great for winding down.

Mysuru has rich historical significance, with regal palaces, museums, and lively festivals that offer retirees a culturally enriching experience, including a vibrant literature festival run by one of its oldest book clubs. It is globally known for its Yoga culture, and the traffic is smooth! Additionally, the cost of living in Mysuru is reasonable, making it an attractive option for retirees.

Chandigarh - Urban Oasis

Chandigarh, the planned city designed by architect Le Corbusier, has always been a top retirement destination. The Ease of Living Index 2022-2023 ranks Chandigarh as one of the best cities in terms of urban planning, ensuring a well-organized and accessible city for retirees. Chandigarh offers an efficient public service, many green spaces, and a variety of cultural activities to keep you engaged. The city's healthcare facilities and general safety make it an attractive option for retirees seeking a well-balanced urban lifestyle. It is also a gateway to the hills nearby.
