What is Shingles?
- Shingles is a disorder of the nerve, characterized by a painful skin rash

- Also known as Herpes Zoster

- Caused by the Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV), the same virus that causes chickenpox

- After someone recovers from chickenpox, the virus remains alive but silent in their nerve tissues

- Usually many years after the chickenpox infection, the VZ virus ?wakes up? and reactivates, causing

Shingles

Shingles usually occurs after the age of 50 years when immunity starts to decline
